Why an erection crew
Why a steel erection crew for repairs
A pre-engineered steel building is a system: main frames, then the purlins, girts and bracing that tie them together, then the roof and wall panels, trim and doors that close it in. An erection crew assembles all of those parts on new buildings, so it knows how they fit together and what has to come off to reach a damaged piece.
That matters on a repair, where replacing one bent girt or torn panel can mean removing and refitting the parts around it. Damage to the main frames or bracing is different: it needs an engineer’s review before anything is replaced. See what steel building erection covers.
What to look for
Signs a steel building needs attention
Most problems on a steel building start small. Walk around it after a hard winter or a big storm and look for wall panels dented or torn at bumper height, trim or panels lifted by wind, and fasteners that are loose, missing or rusted. Check the bottom of the walls for rust where snow and water sit, and see whether doors still open and close squarely.
Inside, look up at the girts, purlins and bracing for anything bent or out of line. Take dated photos of anything you find, because they make any repair conversation easier. For the roof, see roof checks for existing steel buildings.

Questions
Questions about steel building repairs
Can one damaged wall or roof panel be replaced on its own?
Usually, yes. Panels are fastened to the girts or purlins, so a damaged one can often be taken off and replaced without redoing the whole wall or roof. The new panel has to match the old one’s rib profile, and a new color may not match panels that have faded in the sun.
What if a column, rafter or brace is bent?
Bent main frames or bracing affect how the whole building carries snow and wind, so have an engineer look at the damage before anything is straightened or replaced, ideally working from the building’s original drawings. Bent girts and purlins are secondary parts, but they still need the right replacement pieces and connections. Keep people and vehicles clear of a badly damaged area until it has been checked.
What should I do after storm or impact damage?
Photograph the damage from several angles before anything is moved or repaired, and note the date and what happened. If you plan to make an insurance claim, ask your insurer what it needs before repairs start, since coverage depends on your policy. If water is getting in, limit further damage where it is safe to do so.
Can an older steel building be re-sheeted?
Often it can. New wall or roof panels can go onto the existing frames once the framing, bracing and fastener lines have been checked, and the job can be a chance to add or replace insulation. How much of the old trim, doors and panels can stay depends on their condition and on whether matching parts are still made.
Does it matter who made my steel building?
It helps. Panel profiles, trim shapes and frame parts differ between manufacturers, so the manufacturer’s name, the building’s drawings or purchase paperwork, and its approximate age make matching parts easier to find. If the manufacturer is no longer in business, panels can sometimes be matched by measuring the profile. Send us the building’s details when you get in touch.
