Home base
Colorado Springs and the Front Range
Around Colorado Springs and along the Front Range, GDL Steel Erectors LLC works on commercial, industrial, residential and agricultural steel buildings.
Which office reviews a steel building’s plans depends on where the site is, and sometimes on whether it’s inside city limits.
- The Pikes Peak region. The Pikes Peak Regional Building Department is the building department for Colorado Springs, El Paso County, Fountain, Woodland Park, Manitou Springs, Monument, Green Mountain Falls, Palmer Lake and Calhan. pprbd.org
- The Denver metro. Inside Littleton, the City’s Building Division reviews plans and issues permits; in unincorporated Arapahoe County, the County’s Building Division issues them. The Littleton page explains how to tell which one covers a site.
- Farther out. The crew travels for larger jobs, and recent ones have been a long way from home. The city or county that covers the site sets the rules, and some states add their own, as the job town pages below show. Tell us where the building is going and we’ll say what the job needs.

Where recent jobs have taken the crew
Each card links to a page with the job’s photos and what to know before building in that town. Distances are straight-line from Colorado Springs.
Colorado · about 55 miles
Littleton
Arapahoe County, in the south Denver metro: steel buildings on an equipment yard.
Why it matters: Not every job is custom. On a plain wall with no windows or wainscot, every panel and trim line is in full view.
Colorado · about 210 miles
Glade Park
Mesa County, on the Western Slope near Grand Junction: a steel building with a covered porch and two open bays.
Why it matters: Framed openings are designed with the building, so door sizes are best settled before the steel is ordered. This wall has two, one wider than the other.
Colorado · about 70 miles
Byers
Arapahoe County, east of Denver: a large gray steel shop.
Why it matters: On open plains nothing breaks the wind, so a building there is designed for higher wind loads than one sheltered by trees or other buildings. The crew braces and fastens it to the manufacturer’s drawings.
Colorado · about 65 miles
Golden
Jefferson County, in the foothills: a green steel shop among pines.
Why it matters: A walk door lets people in and out without opening the big doors. It’s framed into the wall like the other openings.
Colorado · about 60 miles
Westcliffe
Custer County, in the Wet Mountain Valley: a long tan shop and a gray shop.
Why it matters: Gutters catch the water running off the roof, and downspouts bring it down at a few points instead of along the whole wall.
Colorado · about 155 miles
Hotchkiss
Delta County, on the Western Slope: a cream steel barn with cupolas and lean-to sheds.
Why it matters: An open-sided lean-to gives shade and shelter for animals or equipment without closing the space in.
Colorado · about 95 miles
Longmont
North of Denver: a green equipment shed with three open bays.
Why it matters: Open bays let machinery drive straight in, and the roof keeps sun, hail and snow off it.
Nebraska · about 300 miles
Mullen
Hooker County, in the Sandhills: lodge-style steel buildings with standing-seam roofs.
Why it matters: Steel buildings don’t have to look industrial. This one has several roof lines, dark walls, stone wainscot and timber-style trim around the windows.
Questions
Service area questions
Has GDL Steel worked outside Colorado?
Yes. The crew travels for larger jobs. Recent commercial jobs were near Mullen, Nebraska; near Delta, Utah; and in Pahrump, Nevada. Recent residential shops were near Townsend, Montana, and in eastern Wyoming. Colorado is still where most of the work is, so tell us the town and we’ll say what the job needs.
Who issues the building permit for a steel building?
The building department that covers the site. In Colorado Springs, El Paso County and the other places listed above, that’s the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department; elsewhere it’s usually the city or the county. When a general contractor runs the job, the permit application is usually theirs.
What should I tell GDL about the site?
The town or the site address, whether it’s inside city limits, and what access the site has for delivery trucks and lifts. Those details can decide which office reviews the plans and how the steel is unloaded and lifted.
