A Longmont address can be inside the city or on unincorporated county land, and the office that covers it sets the code edition. Here’s what the City of Longmont and Boulder County publish; confirm the details with the office that covers your site.
- The office decides the code edition. Unincorporated Boulder County runs on the 2021 International Codes as amended; the City of Longmont adopted the 2024 International Codes. Both took effect on July 1, 2026, and a Longmont mailing address doesn’t settle which one you are under. Boulder County code amendments
- Unincorporated Boulder County. Boulder County Community Planning & Permitting, Building Safety and Inspections, permits and inspects unincorporated land, at (303) 441-3926. No one may erect, alter or change the use of a structure there without a permit first. Boulder County building safety
- Inside the city. The City of Longmont’s Building Services at 385 Kimbark Street permits and inspects, at (303) 651-8332. Longmont building permits
- In the county, snow and wind come off a map. Boulder County’s own code table lists the ground snow load and the wind speed as “Varies” and tells the building official to read your site’s numbers off the county’s snow load and wind speed maps. The frost line depth is 30 inches and the seismic design category is B. Get your site’s snow and wind numbers from the county before anyone orders steel. County code amendments
- The farm exemption stops at 200 square feet. Boulder County exempts a one-story detached accessory structure, such as an agricultural loafing shed, only up to 200 square feet, no more than 12 feet tall, with no utilities. It also caps how many un-permitted accessory structures a parcel may have, by acreage. A working equipment shed is past that line. When a permit is required
- The county licenses contractors, and names farm buildings. Boulder County counts as a contractor anyone doing work for pay that needs a building permit, and one of its license classes covers pre-engineered agricultural buildings by name. The city licenses separately, and a county license does not carry into it. Ask anyone bidding your job, us included, for the license that covers your site. Boulder County contractor licensing

Inside city limits it is the City of Longmont’s Building Services at 385 Kimbark Street, at (303) 651-8332, under the 2024 International Codes.
