Building near Golden
Before a steel building goes up near Golden
Golden addresses sit on both sides of the city limits, and the two offices publish different design numbers and different amendments. Here’s what each publishes; confirm the details with the one that covers your site.
- First, find out which side of the line you’re on. A foothills address near Golden is often unincorporated. The City tells applicants to run the address through Jefferson County’s Address Wizard and, if it falls outside city limits, to contact the county’s Building Safety Division instead. City of Golden building permits
- Inside the city. The City of Golden Building Division permits and inspects, at (303) 384-8151, on the 2024 International Codes and the 2023 electrical code. The figures it publishes are a 69 psf ground snow load and a 150 mph ultimate wind speed for Risk Category II in Exposure C, plus a 36-inch frost depth. The City’s adopting ordinance lists a lower snow number, so get the figures in writing from the Building Division before anyone designs a frame to them. Golden design criteria
- Unincorporated Jefferson County. The Division of Building Safety at 100 Jefferson County Parkway permits and inspects, at (303) 271-8260. The county approved the 2024 codes and its own supplements on March 31, 2026, effective July 1, 2026. Jefferson County adopted codes
- In the county, snow load follows elevation. The county sets snow load by elevation, in steps of 125 feet. Below 6,500 feet it is 43 psf on the ground and 30 psf on the roof. At 7,000 feet it is 54 and 38, at 7,500 feet 67 and 47, and at 8,000 feet 82 and 57. Above 70 psf a registered design professional has to design the building, and the permit application has to state the site’s elevation. County design requirements
- In the county, a metal building needs an engineer’s stamp. Jefferson County’s supplement names metal buildings and structures: their construction documents have to be prepared and stamped by a Colorado-licensed engineer or architect. So does every foundation, except for detached accessory structures under 1,000 square feet. Budget for that engineering, and order the building with a stamped drawing package. County code supplements (PDF)
- Both offices check the contractor. The City of Golden requires contractors to register with the building official before working in the city. Unincorporated Jefferson County requires a county license, held before the work starts. One doesn’t cover the other. Ask anyone bidding your job, us included, which one they hold. Questions
Golden steel building questions
Does GDL Steel take jobs in the foothills west of Denver?
Yes. The shop in these photos is a GDL job near Golden, and GDL Steel works across the Front Range from its base in Colorado Springs. For a building in the foothills, call (719) 820-5298 or send the form below with the site address, its elevation if you know it, the building’s size and your timeline.
Who issues the building permit for a steel building near Golden?
It depends on which side of the city limits the site is on. Inside them, the City of Golden Building Division permits and inspects under the 2024 International Codes. Outside them, Jefferson County’s Division of Building Safety does, under the county’s 2024 codes and supplements effective July 1, 2026. The City’s own advice is to run the address through the county’s Address Wizard first, because a Golden mailing address doesn’t settle it.
How much snow does a building in the foothills have to carry?
In unincorporated Jefferson County it depends on elevation, off a table that steps every 125 feet: 43 psf ground and 30 psf roof below 6,500 feet, rising to 82 and 57 at 8,000 feet. Above a 70 psf ground snow load a registered design professional has to design the building, and the table crosses that at 7,625 feet. Inside the City of Golden the published figure is different again. Get the number for your site from the office that covers it before you order steel.
